Oh, and don't even think that Michelle Obama hasn't churned her way through the Chicago machine, either. She sat on the City's crooked Landmarks commission for over five years, which could also be re-named as the Alderman's permanent campaign contribution fund. (The City of Chicago has incredibly vague standards for what allows a building and/or neighborhood to be landmarked. Any Chicago Alderman overseeing a landmark district knows that the residents and developers in the area have to kiss their butt and donate serious campaign $$$ if they want the building permit process "expedited" at City Hall). Because of the onerous permitting process associated with landmarked buildings, landmarking can also take a huge chunk of value out of property. So if you can "make friends" on the Commission, that can translate into thousands, if not millions, of property value swing.
